El español la lengua extranjera más elegida en Bachillerato en Inglaterra por 6º año.

El British Council, la organización del Reino Unido para las relaciones culturales y las oportunidades educativas, ha publicado los resultados de su informe anua «Language Trends England 2025» , que analiza la situación de la enseñanza de idiomas en las escuelas de Inglaterra. Basado en encuestas a más de 1.000 centros de Primaria, Secundaria e independientes, el informe ofrece una radiografía actualizada del panorama lingüístico en el país.

Por sexto año consecutivo (desde el curso 2018-2019), el español es la lengua extranjera más popular entre los estudiantes de Bachillerato de Inglaterra para sus exámenes de acceso a la universidad (A-Levels). Esta tendencia refleja no solo un cambio de preferencia, sino una evolución en la percepción del idioma: más accesible, más útil y con una proyección global cada vez mayor.

El informe también sugiere que el español, además de ser la lengua más demandada en Bachillerato, va en camino de convertirse también en la lengua más cursada en el GCSE, la titulación que acredita el fin de la educación secundaria obligatoria en Inglaterra.

Aunque el francés sigue siendo el idioma más ofertado en los primeros años de secundaria, el español consigue mantener a más estudiantes cuando deben decidir si continúan estudiando idiomas a los 14 y 16 años. Esta capacidad de retención refuerza su liderazgo en la etapa postobligatoria (de 16 a 18 años), conocida como Sixth Form o College, en la que los alumnos cursan los A-Levels u otras titulaciones que les permiten acceder a la universidad o al mercado laboral.

“Los resultados de Language Trends 2025 muestran una preferencia cada vez más marcada por el español entre los jóvenes ingleses”, afirma Maureen McAlinden, directora de English and School Education en España. “La apuesta por los idiomas en las aulas no solo fortalece competencias lingüísticas. Es también una inversión en empleabilidad, interculturalidad y futuro. Los jóvenes que dominan el inglés y el español están especialmente bien preparados para participar activamente en la ciudadanía global”, concluye.

Enseñanza desigual según el contexto socioeconómico

El informe advierte de una brecha persistente en el acceso a los idiomas según el perfil de los centros. Las escuelas públicas con mayor nivel de desventaja social presentan dificultades significativas para contratar profesorado de lenguas extranjeras y apenas pueden mantener grupos reducidos en los niveles superiores. En cambio, los centros más acomodados registran tasas de matriculación en idiomas hasta 20 puntos porcentuales superiores. Además, se confirma que casi un tercio de los colegios más desfavorecidos tienen un alto porcentaje de alumnado que habla otro idioma además del inglés en casa, lo que subraya la importancia de reconocer y apoyar la diversidad lingüística dentro del sistema educativo.

Un cambio sostenido

Desde 2019, el español se ha consolidado como la lengua extranjera más cursada en el nivel A-Level, superando al francés y manteniéndose en cabeza durante seis años consecutivos. Aunque las cifras han fluctuado ligeramente en los últimos cursos, los informes anuales Language Trends han documentado un cambio sostenido que posiciona al español como una lengua de futuro en el sistema educativo inglés.

Los informes Language Trends se han ido ampliando progresivamente para ofrecer una visión más completa de la enseñanza de idiomas en todo el Reino Unido.
