Dominar una lengua extranjera como el inglés constituye un requisito indispensable, especialmente si el destino elegido corresponde a un país angloparlante como Irlanda o Malta, o en el que se imparten programas académicos en esta lengua, como España, Países Bajos, Suecia o Alemania.
Por ello, el British Council, la organización del Reino Unido para las relaciones culturales y las oportunidades educativas, ha preparado una serie de orientaciones útiles para quienes necesiten acreditar su nivel de inglés de cara a la candidatura Erasmus+.
¿Por dónde empezar?
Uno de los primeros pasos consiste en consultar los requisitos lingüísticos establecidos por la universidad de destino. Por lo general, se expresan según el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas (MCER), y suelen pedir un nivel B1 o B2. La información sobre los certificados reconocidos está disponible en la web de la universidad de origen, con los títulos admitidos por las universidades españolas. Por otro lado, los estudiantes deben consultar también, de manera independiente, los requerimientos de las universidades de destino.
En el caso de Cataluña, también se aceptan certificados autorizados por la Generalitat. Es importante consultar esta información con tiempo para asegurar que el examen elegido sea válido.
¿Qué examen elegir?
No todos los certificados lingüísticos funcionan del mismo modo. Por ello, es necesario comprender qué tipo de prueba se adapta mejor a los requisitos de la universidad de destino y a las necesidades del estudiante.
Existen dos grandes categorías de certificaciones. Por un lado, están los exámenes que evalúan un nivel concreto y requieren alcanzar una puntuación mínima para obtener el certificado correspondiente. Entre ellos se encuentran pruebas como Cambridge First o Advanced o Trinity.
Su estructura es clara: se aprueban o se suspenden. Por otro lado, existen los llamados exámenes multinivel, como IELTS, TOEFL o Aptis ESOL. En este caso, no se aprueba ni se suspende: la prueba mide el nivel real del candidato en función de su desempeño y otorga una certificación que refleja el dominio alcanzado.
La elección entre una opción u otra dependerá de varios factores: los certificados admitidos por la universidad de destino, el nivel exigido, la confianza del estudiante en alcanzar un determinado resultado, y los planes académicos o profesionales a medio y largo plazo.
Mientras que algunas universidades de destino tienen una lista de certificados aceptados para Erasmus, como IELTS, TOEFL o Cambridge, que cuentan con un reconocimiento internacional amplio — especialmente útil para quienes proyectan estudiar o trabajar fuera de España—, otras universidades no requieren unos certificados específicos y admiten cualquier certificado válido en el país de origen, como Aptis ESOL o los exámenes de la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas, que son más accesibles y ampliamente reconocidos a nivel nacional.
