Entrevista a María Benjumea – Liderazgo y Visión de SOUTH SUMMIT

Presidenta de South Summit, evento que se celebrará del 4 al 6 de junio en Madrid

En el marco de una nueva edición de South Summit, que tendrá lugar próximamente en Madrid, entrevistamos a María Benjumea, fundadora y presidenta de este encuentro global de innovación, emprendimiento e inversión. Con una visión clara, inspiradora y profundamente humana, Benjumea comparte su experiencia liderando uno de los eventos más influyentes del ecosistema emprendedor internacional.

Desde sus inicios en plena crisis económica en 2012 hasta su consolidación como plataforma global, South Summit ha sabido combinar innovación, colaboración y crecimiento como motores de transformación. María Benjumea nos habla del papel esencial del equipo, de la importancia de cambiar la mentalidad para ver oportunidades en los desafíos, y de cómo han logrado llevar el espíritu emprendedor español a escenarios internacionales como Latinoamérica, Asia y Europa.

En esta conversación cercana, descubrimos no solo la evolución de South Summit, sino también las dificultades superadas, la apuesta por la sostenibilidad y el compromiso con las personas y el planeta. Una entrevista imprescindible para entender el presente y el futuro del emprendimiento global, de la mano de una de sus principales impulsoras.

1. Estamos delante de una persona que es un referente, tanto a nivel de liderazgo de personas como a través de las ideas. Yo creo que este es un proyecto que une dos cosas que hoy por hoy son realmente fantásticas, muy llamativas, y que en tu persona se conjugan.
La primera pregunta que tenemos para ti es: ¿cómo se lidera un proyecto de estos? Ya ni siquiera te pregunto qué es South Summit, sino cómo se lidera algo tan grande.

Bueno, lo primero que quiero decirte es que el placer es absolutamente mío. Estoy encantadísima de estar aquí contigo, de tener esta conversación, y de estar con todos vosotros.

Yo creo que lo más bonito —porque ya no es sólo lo que es o lo que debe ser— sino lo más bonito es la ilusión que tiene el proyecto. La convicción de que realmente merece la pena trabajar en un proyecto de estas características.
Un proyecto no es lo más importante cuando hablamos de personas. Hablamos de un equipo. Y poder montar este proyecto conjuntamente con todo el equipo, en donde todos somos absolutamente necesarios, como siempre decimos —y esto es más cierto que nunca—: no se puede hacer nada si no tienes un equipo extraordinario detrás, que se complemente desde todos los puntos de vista.

2.Cuéntanos muy rápidamente cuál es la evolución que ha tenido este proyecto. Más o menos, yo creo que todo nuestro público lo sabe, pero es interesante saber hasta dónde habéis llegado. Porque ahora mismo, yo hace muy poco acabo de descubrir que vais a estar en Corea en nada, ¿verdad? Bueno, pues eso ya es una novedad. Saber desde dónde nace hasta dónde llega, pues será realmente tu relato.

—Pues la verdad es que ha sido un camino precioso. El punto de partida fue extraordinario. Nosotros nacimos en lo peor de la crisis, en el año 2012, cuando todos —bueno, todos no, porque muchos ya lo sabíais— pero muchos aprendimos entonces lo que era el riesgo real, con todo lo que había.
Realmente estábamos en un año complicado, con una depresión generalizada, porque no sabíamos qué iba a ser de nosotros.
Estábamos convencidos de que la crisis iba a pasar, porque la economía es cíclica. Por muy mal que vayan las cosas, todo vuelve a remontar.


Pero el cambio que se avecinaba era de unas dimensiones extraordinarias. Y todo lo que supone un cambio —y un cambio tan increíble— te ofrece un mundo de oportunidades absolutamente alucinante.

Ese fue nuestro mensaje:
Si cambiamos nuestra mente, tanto como personas como organizaciones, realmente tenemos un abanico de oportunidades para hacer cosas nuevas. Y eso es alucinante.
Eso nos lleva a una transformación, y a saber que nuestra mente tiene que estar siempre adelantándose.

Así comienza nuestra historia, también desde el punto de vista de querer revalorizar nuestro país, lo cual es básico.


Convencernos del potencial que tenemos, del talento increíble que hay en España. Convencernos de que nada de los tópicos es verdad: que somos gente que trabaja extraordinariamente, que hablamos inglés, que tenemos un talento impresionante, que sabemos aprovechar las oportunidades.
Y lo que pretendíamos, a través de Spain Startup primero, y luego con todo el proyecto de South Summit, era atraer inversión, atraer talento, atraer fundadores para que vieran todo lo que se está haciendo aquí.

Siempre con una mentalidad absolutamente global. Es decir, nosotros no podíamos quedarnos limitados a una parte del mundo. El mundo es global, no existen fronteras.
Y si empezamos a hacer South Summit en inglés es porque el idioma de los negocios es el inglés.
Y si realmente estamos preparados para vivir en ese mundo global, entonces tenemos que ser acogedores, y hacer que todo el mundo se sienta extraordinario.

Así empezamos con South Summit. Comenzamos en la Mutua, los fondos a la Nave. Aquello fue espectacular.
Cambiamos el nombre de Spain Startup por South Summit, y los resultados fueron increíbles. Empezaron a venir inversores de todo el mundo, fundadores también.
Realmente nos convertimos en una plataforma global.

Y lo más importante para nosotros ha sido siempre que se nos identifique como la plataforma global más útil para hacer negocios a nivel internacional. Eso es clave.

Fue una experiencia fantástica. Nos fuimos a la Nave, pero no solo eso: empezamos a trabajar directamente con las corporaciones. Porque en este network, donde están todos los actores del ecosistema, quienes quieren generar negocio tienen que estar. Todo el tejido empresarial, todas las grandes corporaciones que necesitan innovación para responder al ritmo vertiginoso del mercado, necesitan trabajar con las empresas emergentes, que son especialmente innovadoras. Su clave es la innovación, pero también el crecimiento rápido y, por otra parte, a nivel global.

Con lo cual, el trabajo entre ambas partes es clave. Y todo eso se complementa con la «gasolina» del inversor. ¿Qué había que hacer? Trabajar con las corporaciones para cambiar su cultura, para trasladarles lo importante que es trabajar con este compañero de viaje. Por eso, innovación y colaboración se convirtieron en dos palabras absolutamente clave en ese momento.

Empezamos a salir fuera de España, primero hacia nuestro entorno natural. Siempre nos hemos considerado profundamente europeos, y también profundamente iberoamericanos. Y unir estas dos grandes regiones —junto con otras regiones del mundo— abriendo Iberoamérica, nos parecía fundamental.

De ahí nos fuimos a Colombia, donde tuvimos nuestro primer gran encuentro. Luego fuimos a Argentina, después a México, volvimos a Colombia y finalmente llegamos a nuestra segunda casa: Brasil. Y ahora estamos a punto de irnos, porque entre el 9 y el 11 —a todos los que queráis venir—, os aseguramos que os encantará sumaros a nosotros. Es un encuentro espectacular. La gente, la manera de aunar al mundo iberoamericano y atraer personas de Asia, de Estados Unidos, de Europa… generar todo ese network enfocado en negocios es básico.

Y de ahí seguimos creciendo. Como tú bien apuntabas al principio, nos fuimos a Asia. Nuestra primera parada allí fue Corea, un país clave para nosotros, especialmente por su enfoque en inteligencia artificial. Fue una experiencia espectacular, y pronto veremos más resultados.

3. Dentro de todo ese recorrido, que ha tenido muchos éxitos —totalmente palpables—, ¿cuál ha sido la dificultad más importante que has tenido que superar?

Pues mira, dificultades hay siempre. En la vida profesional de cualquiera, y también en la personal. El camino no estaría completo sin obstáculos. Lo importante es convencernos de que somos absolutamente capaces de superarlos. Para eso se necesita constancia, convicción, muchísimo trabajo y, sobre todo, una actitud positiva. La actitud positiva y la sonrisa constante son clave para poder superar cualquier tema.

Una de las primeras grandes dificultades fue hacer realidad esta charla, este proyecto. Los primeros años íbamos a pecho descubierto, sin ningún tipo de soporte. Cuando nos hablaban de presupuesto, éramos nosotros quienes teníamos que salir a buscarlo para poder hacerlo realidad. Incluso en un año tan difícil como 2016 —tan complicado que estuvimos a punto de tirar la toalla—, volvimos a convencernos de que había que seguir.

Y así, en 2017, nos planteamos ir a Sacha. En un contexto nada fácil, de hecho, extremadamente difícil, lo tuvimos claro: dijimos «equipo, adelante». Porque realmente merecía la pena seguir con esta maravilla. Aportamos mucho valor, no solo para España, sino también para todos los que formamos parte del proyecto. Nos da una energía increíble.

Siempre hay dificultades. Por ejemplo, ahora mismo en Brasil —nuestra segunda casa— han tenido problemas con unas inundaciones devastadoras. Y claro que nos afecta. Nos afecta como personas. Porque dentro de esta visión que tenemos en Sacha, lo esencial es adaptarse. Adaptar lo que hacemos a las necesidades del mercado y a cómo evoluciona.

Nosotros estamos basados en la innovación. ¿Y qué es la innovación? Transformación permanente. Hay que adaptarse constantemente y potenciar que esa innovación sea cada vez mejor. No es solo innovación disruptiva; también es encontrar nuevas soluciones a problemas que ya conocemos, pero de forma más eficiente y útil.

Eso también lo vivimos durante la pandemia: fue otra reinvención de cómo hacer las cosas. Y ahora estamos viendo que la clave es el crecimiento. Las startups no solo deben generar nuevos productos o servicios, sino que su característica principal es el crecimiento, y un crecimiento realmente muy rápido. Hay que apoyarlas en ese proceso.

Por eso, el enfoque ahora es el crecimiento, y no podemos dejarlo de lado. Este año puede parecer imposible, pero hay que apoyar a las empresas que están en ese nivel de crecimiento. Independientemente de su origen, siempre poniendo en el centro a las personas y al planeta. La sostenibilidad es clave.

Estamos en un mundo cambiante. Hablamos de innovación, de nuevas tecnologías, que deben ser nuestros mejores aliados. Pero siempre con las personas en el centro. Y en este entorno cambiante —esta situación global—, debemos volver a darle una vuelta de tuerca a todo.

4. Durante esta entrevista hemos hablado de adaptación, actitud, innovación, tecnología, unión de mundos, desarrollo, crecimiento… ¿Cómo nos va a afectar todo esto en el futuro? ¿Qué previsiones tenéis?

Ahora mismo estamos en un contexto de incertidumbre política y económica, que seguramente es a lo que te refieres. Y creo que con perseverancia, buena actitud y decisión, saldremos adelante. Lo que está pasando está ocurriendo en el mundo entero, pero nosotros tenemos que seguir nuestro camino.

Esperemos que nada lo distorsione, pero tenemos que poner todos de nuestra parte. Seguir creando, seguir fomentando la innovación, desarrollando la tecnología y conectando a las personas. Siempre con esas dos palabras clave: innovación y colaboración.

Y recordar que, por muchas tecnologías que existan, no van a sustituirnos como seres humanos. Tenemos que trabajar como humanos para los humanos, y por el planeta. A pesar de esta incertidumbre geopolítica y económica, creo que todos podemos poner un granito de arena. Por pequeño que sea, suma y multiplica. Y con eso podemos hacer mucho. No dejemos de hacerlo.

5. Por último, ¿podrías decirnos tres palabras —ni siquiera tres cosas, solo tres palabras— que resuman lo que alguien va a vivir si se une a vuestra plataforma?

Claro. Aunque voy a hacer trampa y usar alguna más:

  1. No lo dudes. Te lo mereces.
  2. Abre los ojos. No solo para definir tu proyecto, sino para ver las oportunidades.
  3. Muévete. Muévete muchísimo, porque todo se consigue moviéndote y escuchando.

Un placer escuchar tanta pasión. Es un verdadero ejemplo de comunicación, de cómo llegar a los demás. Has mencionado palabras clave como consistencia, perseverancia, confianza, compromiso, colaboración… Las famosas cinco o seis claves del éxito.
