Más allá de la salud y el empleo: ¿Es la prevención laboral la clave para cumplir los ODS?
La prevención laboral en los campus universitarios también impulsa la sostenibilidad, según un estudio de la Universidad Francisco de Vitoria.

Cada año, más de 2,3 millones de personas mueren en el mundo a causa de accidentes o enfermedades relacionadas con el trabajo, según la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT). Esta cifra, que refleja la magnitud del problema, también interpela a las instituciones educativas: ¿cómo pueden las universidades proteger a sus comunidades y contribuir a un futuro más sostenible?
A esta pregunta responde un estudio liderado por la Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV) a través de su Cátedra IRSS-UFV ,que demuestra que los servicios de salud y seguridad laboral en los campus universitarios no solo previenen riesgos, sino que también impulsan el cumplimiento de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) de la Agenda 2030.
El trabajo, publicado en la revista Frontiers in Public Health, plantea un modelo replicable que convierte la prevención en un motor de sostenibilidad.
“Las universidades pueden cuidar y proteger a sus comunidades y, con las acciones adecuadas, cambiar conductas y contribuir de manera directa a los ODS”, explica Mónica Samper, directora del Servicio de Seguridad, Salud y Bienestar de la UFV y autora principal del estudio.
De la prevención convencional a la sostenibilidad global
Hasta hace poco, hablar de prevención en una universidad evocaba revisiones médicas, simulacros o protocolos de laboratorio. Sin embargo, la investigación demuestra que estas acciones tienen un impacto mucho más amplio: promueven la igualdad, la inclusión, la educación de calidad, la innovación científica y la sostenibilidad ambiental. Los datos recopilados revelan que los servicios de prevención universitaria tienen un efecto directo sobre la Agenda 2030.
Una herramienta pionera: la Matriz de Impacto en los ODS
El estudio, desarrollado junto a investigadores de las universidades de Cantabria, Córdoba y Carlos III de Madrid, analizó las prácticas de 29 universidades españolas, casi la mitad de las integradas en la red de servicios de prevención de Crue Universidades Españolas.
De las 60 iniciativas identificadas surgió la Matriz de Impacto en los ODS, la primera herramienta que vincula de manera sistemática la salud y la seguridad laboral universitaria con los objetivos de la Agenda 2030.
Incluye desde la certificación de espacios cardioprotegidos y los simulacros de emergencia hasta campañas de concienciación como Accident-Art , protocolos de igualdad y programas de promoción de la salud como Exercise in Medicine on Campus, que distinguuió a la UFV rn 2024 cono Gold Campus.
“Lo transformador es movilizar estas palancas de manera integrada, porque entonces la prevención laboral se convierte en un verdadero motor de sostenibilidad”, señala Enrique Colino, codirector de la Cátedra IRSST-UFV y coautor del trabajo.
Para Ciro Salcines, responsable de Salud y Seguridad de la Universidad de Cantabria, “lo más valioso ha sido generar un lenguaje común entre universidades; compartir experiencias es lo que convierte una buena práctica en un modelo replicable”.
En la misma línea, Pablo López, técnico del Servicio de Prevención de la Universidad de Córdoba, destaca que “uno de los mayores logros del proyecto ha sido tejer un marco de entendimiento común entre los servicios de prevención de distintas universidades”.
Tres dimensiones que convierten la prevención en cultura universitaria
La Matriz de Impacto clasifica las acciones en tres grandes dimensiones:
- Persona, que agrupa las iniciativas de salud y bienestar (revisiones médicas, apoyo psicológico, campañas de hábitos saludables).
- Entorno, centrado en la seguridad y sostenibilidad de los espacios (movilidad responsable, gestión ambiental).
- Cultura preventiva, que integra la seguridad en la identidad institucional mediante certificaciones, auditorías y proyectos de sensibilización.
De la seguridad en el campus a los ODS
El estudio confirma la vinculación directa de la prevención universitaria con los ODS 3 (Salud y bienestar) y 8 (Trabajo decente y crecimiento económico), y establece nuevas conexiones con los ODS 4 (Educación de calidad), 5 (Igualdad de género), 9 (Industria e innovación), 11 (Ciudades sostenibles), 12 (Consumo responsable), 16 (Instituciones sólidas) y 17 (Alianzas para los objetivos).
Una hoja de ruta para integrar la prevención en la sostenibilidad universitaria
Aunque de carácter exploratorio, el estudio constituye una primera aproximación nacional que visibiliza la aportación de los servicios de prevención universitaria a la Agenda 2030. Los autores recomiendan que estos servicios se integren en los comités de sostenibilidad de cada institución y que su contribución se reconozca en rankings internacionales como el Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
“El gran valor de este trabajo es haber creado un marco común y adaptable que cualquier universidad puede aplicar para fortalecer su cultura preventiva y responder a los retos en salud, bienestar y sostenibilidad”, concluyen los investigadores.
Este estudio se enmarca en la labor investigadora de la Cátedra IRSST-UFV, creada por la Universidad Francisco de Vitoria y el Instituto Regional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo de la Comunidad de Madrid, que impulsa proyectos orientados a fortalecer la cultura preventiva y promover entornos laborales saludables y sostenibles. Con esta investigación, la cátedra refuerza su compromiso con la generación de conocimiento aplicado que sirva de guía a otras universidades en la integración de la salud, la seguridad y la sostenibilidad como ejes estratégicos de su desarrollo institucional.
