Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 06 de octubre de 2025. ARQUIMEA, grupo tecnológico español y cofundador de la spin-off Molefy Pharma junto con investigadores del CSIC celebra la concesión de una ayuda de 1 millón de dólares por parte de la ALS Association (ALS.org) para acelerar el desarrollo del compuesto AP-2, orientado al tratamiento de la esclerosis lateral amiotrófica (ELA). Este respaldo internacional reconoce el enfoque científico de Molefy Pharma y la estrategia de ARQUIMEA de apoyar tecnologías con potencial transformador en salud.
Molefy Pharma trabaja en el desarrollo de AP-2, una molécula que en estudios preclínicos ha demostrado un gran potencial como posible tratamiento para la ELA, una enfermedad neurodegenerativa que actualmente no tiene cura. La ELA afecta a unas 270.000 personas en el mundo y cada año se diagnostican alrededor de 40.000 nuevos casos. Su impacto socioeconómico es enorme, con un coste global estimado en más de 2.000 millones de dólares anuales, y supone una de las mayores necesidades médicas no cubiertas en el ámbito de las enfermedades raras y neurodegenerativas.
La financiación permitirá a Molefy Pharma avanzar hacia la fase I de su ensayo clínico con voluntarios sanos, lo que servirá para comprobar la seguridad del fármaco como potencial cura contra la ELA, siendo un ensayo “First in Human”. Este se realizará en la Unidad de Ensayos Clínicos del Hospital de La Princesa. Posteriormente, está prevista la realización de una fase 1B con un grupo de 24 pacientes diagnosticados con ELA.
Esta ayuda no reembolsable forma parte del compromiso de la ALS Association por acelerar la investigación de tratamientos transformadores para los pacientes con ELA, una enfermedad para la que aún no existe cura.
“Este apoyo representa mucho más que financiación. Es una ratificación internacional del potencial terapéutico de nuestra aproximación y del impacto que queremos lograr para los pacientes y sus familias”, explica Ana Martinez, co-fundadora de Molefy Pharma.
La ALS Association, con sede en EE. UU, es una de las principales entidades mundiales en el ámbito de la investigación de la ELA. Su programa de apoyo a la innovación busca identificar y potenciar proyectos con alto potencial de impacto clínico y escalabilidad internacional.
