Barcelona, 12 de mayo de 2025- La Fundación Pasqual Maragall y su centro de investigación, el Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (BBRC), refuerzan su estructura directiva con el nombramiento de Joan Vives como nuevo gerente de ambas instituciones.

Con más de veinte años de experiencia en la dirección de centros de investigación biomédica en Europa y África, Vives aportará a la Fundación un liderazgo y una gestión centrados en la excelencia científica, con una visión estratégica orientada a fortalecer la capacidad de impacto de ambas organizaciones.

“En esta nueva etapa, me propongo contribuir a una gestión eficiente alineada con los valores de ambas entidades, reforzando el liderazgo estratégico y la transformación organizacional, teniendo siempre en cuenta el desarrollo profesional de los equipos. También es prioritario seguir avanzando en la internacionalización, mejorar la gestión de los proyectos de innovación y acercar la actividad del centro a la ciudadanía y a nuestros colaboradores”, destaca Joan Vives.

Con esta incorporación, la Fundación y el BBRC refuerzan su estructura para continuar avanzando en sus retos frente al Alzheimer y otras enfermedades neurodegenerativas. En este sentido, el Dr. Arcadi Navarro, director de ambas entidades, ha subrayado que “nos encontramos en un momento clave en la investigación del Alzheimer, y en la Fundación y en el BBRC nos hemos marcado una hoja de ruta muy ambiciosa con los planes estratégicos de ambas organizaciones; estamos convencidos de que con Joan Vives como gerente lograremos todo lo que nos proponemos y mucho más”.

Crecimiento de la Fundación y del BBRC

La Fundación Pasqual Maragall vive un momento clave de expansión y consolidación. Actualmente, cuenta con un equipo de más de 250 profesionales entre ambas instituciones, y con una base social cercana a los 100.000 socios y socias. Solo en el último año, más de 18.500 personas se han sumado a la institución, una cifra récord que evidencia el apoyo que recibe la entidad en todo el territorio.

En el ámbito científico, la Fundación ya cuenta con seis grupos de investigación especializados, que abordan áreas estratégicas del Alzheimer y otras neurociencias, además de nuevas plataformas tecnológicas que impulsan proyectos innovadores, tanto propios como en colaboración con centros nacionales e internacionales. Y en el plano social, la entidad trabaja para lograr una mayor proyección nacional e internacional, con proyectos innovadores, investigación social y apoyo a personas cuidadoras, entre otras iniciativas.

Sobre Joan Vives

Con formación en ingeniería técnica, Vives ha complementado sus estudios con varios programas de posgrado: un máster en dirección de operaciones y servicios (ESADE), un máster internacional en economía de la salud y farmacoeconomía (Universitat Pompeu Fabra), y un posgrado en desarrollo internacional (UPC). A lo largo de su carrera ha ocupado cargos ejecutivos en instituciones de referencia del sector biomédico, combinando la dirección estratégica con la gestión operativa y la transformación institucional. Esta experiencia le ha permitido gestionar operaciones complejas y liderar proyectos vinculados a la sostenibilidad, las infraestructuras científicas, la digitalización o la gobernanza. Hasta ahora, ha sido Director Administrativo del Centro de Regulación Genómica (CRG), donde ha liderado servicios clave de apoyo a una comunidad de más de 500 investigadores e investigadoras. 

Su compromiso con la ciencia va más allá del ámbito ejecutivo. Vives ha participado como asesor y miembro de consejos de gobierno y comités científicos en instituciones como la London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), la Wellcome Trust o el propio BBRC, del que formó parte del comité de evaluación científica en 2023. También destaca su participación en iniciativas como el Barcelona Mentoring Programme, de Barcelona Activa, y el UKRI Environmental Sustainability Advisory Group, del Reino Unido.

El Alzheimer en cifras 

Actualmente se estima que el Alzheimer y las enfermedades neurodegenerativas afectan a 900.000 personas, cifra que se traduce en una de cada diez de más de 65 años y un tercio de las de más de 85. Estas patologías son una de las principales causas de mortalidad, discapacidad y dependencia. Si no se encuentra una cura efectiva y con la esperanza de vida en aumento, en el año 2050 el número de casos podría triplicarse en el mundo, superando el millón y medio de personas solo en España, un hecho que podría llegar a colapsar los sistemas sanitarios y asistenciales.
