Cuando en 2015 publiqué Knowmads. Los trabajadores del futuro, el término era aún desconocido fuera de los círculos de innovación y tecnología. Aquella figura del “nómada del conocimiento” —creativo, digital, autónomo, colaborativo— sonaba a vanguardia. Diez años después, ese futuro que entonces se anunciaba ya es presente: la economía global se ha llenado de knowmads.
El libro anticipaba una transformación radical: el paso del empleo estable al talento líquido, del puesto fijo al proyecto, de la jerarquía al trabajo en red. Hoy los datos confirman que aquel cambio no era una tendencia, sino un cambio de era. Según Eurostat, más del 40% de los trabajadores europeos operan bajo modelos híbridos o autónomos, y en España los profesionales independientes han crecido un 30% desde 2018, el mayor incremento de la Unión Europea.
DEL PRONÓSTICO A LA REALIDAD
En 2015, el Oxford Martin School estimaba que el 47% de los empleos eran susceptibles de automatización. Lo que sonaba alarmista se ha cumplido en parte: millones de tareas rutinarias han sido sustituidas por algoritmos y robots. Pero también han nacido miles de nuevas ocupaciones: ingenieros de IA, especialistas en sostenibilidad, gestores de talento digital, creadores de contenido o coaches de propósito.
Según el informe The Future of Skills: Employment in 2030, de Nesta y Pearson, solo un 8% de las ocupaciones actuales crecerán claramente en la próxima década, un 21% disminuirán, y el 70% restante están en terreno incierto. En este contexto, la adaptabilidad, la creatividad y la inteligencia emocional —pilares del modelo knowmad— se han convertido en las competencias más demandadas por las empresas.
Lo que hace una década era una predicción se ha convertido en un diagnóstico de la realidad, explico también en otros dos libros publicados con LID Editorial: Silver Surfers y El poder del carisma. Hoy todo profesional debe reinventarse de forma continua. Ya no se trata de tener un empleo, sino de mantener la empleabilidad sostenible a lo largo del tiempo.
DE LA ERA DIGITAL A LA ERA COGNITIVA
En estos diez años, el trabajo ha mutado más que en los cien anteriores. La pandemia aceleró la digitalización, el teletrabajo y la economía gig. Pero la irrupción de la inteligencia artificial generativa ha marcado un nuevo punto de inflexión: el paso de la era digital a la era cognitiva, donde la frontera entre humanos y máquinas se difumina.
En este escenario, los knowmads se consolidan como la fuerza laboral más valiosa: personas que piensan como emprendedores, aprenden de forma continua y se adaptan al cambio con agilidad mental y emocional. Según la OCDE, el 60% de los trabajadores necesitará reentrenarse antes de 2030, y los sectores con más crecimiento serán educación, salud, comunicación, tecnología humana y creatividad aplicada.
HABILIDADES DEL 2030
El informe de Nesta identifica tres grandes familias de competencias con alta demanda futura:
1. Interpersonales: empatía, enseñanza, coordinación, persuasión.
2. Cognitivas complejas: pensamiento crítico, creatividad, aprendizaje activo.
3. Sistémicas: visión global, toma de decisiones, análisis de sistemas.
En otras palabras, las habilidades más humanas serán las más valiosas en la era de las máquinas. La automatización sustituye tareas, pero no sustituye el propósito, la ética, el liderazgo ni la emoción. Esa es la gran paradoja del siglo XXI: cuanto más avanza la inteligencia artificial, más urgente se vuelve desarrollar la inteligencia humana.
DEL FUTURE OF WORK AL HUMAN FUTURE
Llevo años defendiendo que el futuro del trabajo no es tecnológico, sino antropológico.El reto no es convivir con la IA, sino evolucionar con ella.. No competimos con los algoritmos: los complementamos. La ventaja comparativa del ser humano está en su capacidad de conexión, inspiración y propósito.
Me hace muy feliz estar aquí hoy, presenciando cómo tantas personas y empresas se sienten y viven knowmádicamente. Es una confirmación de que el movimiento knowmad no fue solo una idea, sino una manera de entender el trabajo y la vida.
El knowmad no solo domina herramientas, sino que diseña realidades. Es un profesional libre, transversal, con conciencia social, emocional y digital. Y también es símbolo de una nueva ética laboral: aprender, colaborar y dejar huella.
DIEZ AÑOS DESPUÉS
A diez años de su publicación, Knowmads, ya por la 5ª edición, ha pasado de ser un libro visionario a un manual de supervivencia profesional.
